What Motivates You?

Whether you are a manager, team leader or team member it pays to know what motivates you at work and in life. Understanding your motivators better will enable you to become more fulfilled and ultimately more successful.

Once of the best known motivation theories is Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

We have created a simple ticksheet based on the hierarchy of needs which is designed to highlight your key motivators and areas in which you are not fulfilled.

Using the top green rows in the table below, rate the following motivation factors in terms of how important each one is to you. Number one (1) represents least important and ten (10) most important.

Then complete the questionnaire again, using in the bottom blue row of boxes for each motivation factor. This time you are rating how fulfilled you are in each area.

For example, career advancement may be very important to you (e.g. a 9 or 10 rating) but if you have just been passed over for promotion you may only rate it as 1 or 2 in terms of how fulfilled you are.

Now take a look at the gaps between what you want and need from your work, and what you are actually getting.

Gaps of 4 or more are certainly worth consideration and may also be a subject for discussion with your manager.
