Structuring The Appraisal

  • Start by outlining the benefits of the appraisal, e.g. We are here to go through your annual appraisal. The purpose of this is to see how well you are doing and help you reach your full potential

  • Encourage the appraisee to talk first - ask them open questions to find out what they think of their own performance during the appraisal period

  • Balance your feedback, i.e. good points balanced with areas to develop

  • Keep your language positive

  • Make sure you are measuring people against quantifiable and objective criteria. Remember: your opinion is not measurable!

  • Get the appraisee to set their own goals and objectives - they are then more likely to 'buy into' them

  • End on a positive note - give appropriate praise and thank them for their input
