Test Your Listening Skills
Effective listening is a highly valuable skill in business today. Whatever your business, whatever your position, you will gain more respect, learn more and improve your relationships if you develop your active listening skills.
Most people would rate themselves as a pretty good listener. However, sometimes it is not easy to listen and we do have to make a special effort to listen actively. Some of the main barriers to effective listening are:
- We think we know what the speaker is going to say next
- We have our own agenda and therefore hear what we want to hear
- We are distracted by other things going on in the room
- We are simply waiting for our turn to talk
- We may be prejudiced in some way against the person talking to us
- We are in a hurry and therefore listen selectively
Try testing one of your colleagues with the following questions to see how well they listen. Read each question once only and move through them quickly.
